She Proposed in Ramadan

Share Your Story: Personal stories of Islamic courtship

From Faheem

How we met

I saw her at their house while I was tiling their house. A week after I finished the job I asked my dad to phone her dad because I would like to meet her. It was arranged and we were introduced by our parents. I told them I would like to come and visit her at their house, and if I don't see a possible wife for myself in her I would leave and not waste anyone's time further. So I went four days later to their house for supper and talked about ourselves - to know more about each other.

How I Did It:

Ten days after we met, she asked me to marry her. Everyone was elated - everyone helped from both families. It was close to Ramadaan so we waited till after Ramadaan and got married before my dad left for Hajj that same year.

Advice

  • If she is making salaah and dressing properly it is already a good sign. You also can listen to her speech - don't talk unneccesarily and don't talk about others. If that is there then it is indeed THE WIFE for you.

Was yours an arranged marriage?

She asked her dad to ask my dad if I'm interested in her. I think they (our parents) were waiting for us to make up our own minds.

Did you "date"? How did you get to know each other?

I just went to supper at their house and she and her sister came to supper at our house. It was Ramadaan so we didn't go anywhere.

What qualities were you looking for in a spouse?

Deen should get preference over everything and everyone. It is not always like that, but you must at least strive to be like that.

Did you have any difficulties?

No, just normal quarrels between husband and wife. Never a serious problem.
