Controvery over the separation of "church and state," when Muslim women and girls wear religious headcoverings in public places such as schools. The debate continues in France and other countries.
Hijab in French Schools
In the interests of equality and state secularism, the French government has imposed a legal ban on all "conspicuous religious symbols" in public schools. The ban outlaws hijab (Islamic headscarves), Jewish headcoverings, large crucifixes, and other visible signs of faith.
