Fatwas About the War in Iraq

Mar 21 2003

Is it a Muslim duty to defend Iraq? Islamic scholars speak out.

Saddam Hussein has been calling on the international Muslim community to come to his country's defense against the U.S.-led invasion.

Calling for Jihad

There is a minority view among Muslims that once the U.S.-led coalition invaded Iraq, it became an obligation for Muslims to physically and materially defend her.  Called a "jihad **," these voices call for retaliatory strikes and armed resistance.

Calling for U.S. Support

Another minority view calls for the toppling of Saddam Hussein by any means necessary, with full and unconditional support of U.S. tactics.  Those expressing this view reason that Saddam Hussein is an evil dictator and that it is an Islamic duty to remove such a person from ruling over Muslims.

Calling for Peace

The majority view of Muslims worldwide is that this war could have been avoided, and that it is irresponsible and possibly illegal for the U.S. to turn its back on diplomacy and the international community.  They disagree with Bush that diplomatic channels had been exhausted, and although they do not support Saddam Hussein, feel that his removal from power could be done in another, more peaceful manner.  They believe that Muslims should attempt to solve their internal problems themselves, without relying on outside forces that may have ulterior motives for helping them.  They join millions around the world in calling for a quick end to this conflict, a return to international diplomacy, and protection of the innocent lives on both sides being affected by this war.

Opposing Views

When deciding any question of Islamic law in modern times, it is natural and expected that opinions will differ.  Interpretations of Islamic guidance can vary, although all scholars attempt to root their responses in the primary sources of Islamic law:  the Qur'an and the Sunnah.  It can sometimes be confusing to sift through the differing opinions, but Muslims are left to evaluate the arguments and ultimately decide for themselves.  Here are some examples of other issues where scholar disagree:
