Delaying Menstruation for Hajj?

Tuesday November 18, 2008
A friend asked me a question today that I didn't know how to answer: "I'm going for Hajj this year, insha'Allah. Do you know what I can take to delay my period? I checked the calendar and it's supposed to come right in the middle of Hajj."

Of course I told her that I'm not a doctor, so she should speak to her physician and pharmacist about any medications she might want to take... but I also wondered about the issue behind her question. Isn't menstruation a natural process, not to be altered for our own convenience? Is a woman's hajj any less acceptable if she gets her period?

Reading more, I find some agreement and some disagreement among Islamic scholars on this point. Read the arguments for and against yourself, and share your opinion in the Islam Forum.
