Full-Body Scanners

Wednesday November 12, 2008
The European Parliament has expressed concern about the new full-body scanners being used at some international airports. Critics call the technology a "virtual strip search" and question the human rights, privacy, personal dignity and data protection implications of its use. The EP request a full assessment before it will recommend the scanners for use at EU member aiports.

Full-body scanners, which show images of people underneath their clothing, continue to be installed at some of the busiest airports in the United States. Supporters contend that the technology is better able to detect suspicious objects hidden on the person.

Muslims around the world have also questioned the use of such machines, concerned about Islamic rules of public modesty and privacy rights.

More information about full-body scanners, and your right to refuse this type of screening:

This action is for the protection of all, not the discrimination of anyone. Inshallah we should come to the time when such action is not required.

It is another invasion of privacy and human rights perpetrated in the name of “security”. Incidentally, modesty isn’t just for women and not all screeners are men. The whole thing is just creepy and invasive.

(8) simple person says:

I was subject to 3d body screening at the Atlanta airport on November 29,2008. I had removed my shoes, belt, jewelry and anything that could cause false alarm, and I did not set off the alarm.

Yet, the TSA security picked me for additional screening. I was not offered a choice of a pat-down. I did not see any signs at the checkpont that would educate passengers about the use of millimetre wave scanners, and the rights to refuse it. I was not informed that this equipment takes revealing images of my naked body, and emits radiation at the time of screening. I was ordered to step inside the machine without having given an option. I feel RAPED, and SEXUALLY VIOLATED. I am a fit and attractive woman, I did not give consent of being “virtually stripped” by someone in the remote location, period. Now that I have educated myself of what has been done to me I want to inform an encourage all other passengers that you should speak up! Request pat-down, request more information of what is being done to you! Write down TSA agent names performing pat-downs and 3D scans(without your consent). Report them to the Civil Rights Union, if you feel that you were inappropriately touched. My travels will never be the same. Next time I will be selected for random screening, which I doubt is random, I will call police, TSA supervisor, and let myself be arrested before I strip for someone’s pleasure again.

(9) Why concerned? says:

I have seen the images and they are no more revealing than that of a plastic doll. It shows only a representation of the body, not the real body.

As long as people are not carrying contabanned items then they should have nothing to worry about.
