Muslim Baby Names

Monday August 18, 2008
Every so often, I hear a Muslim name that I've never heard before. This week, it was the boy's name "Louay." I'm still not sure what the name means -- does anyone else know? What are your favorite names? Do you like traditional names, or unusual ones?

I’m not sure this is a particularly helpful response to Huda’s question. Regarding that, I will go to behindthename.com and see what I find.

I think ‘Louay’ is more to be called modern Arabic name than traditional Islamic. It comes from “Ay” which is the brave strong ox.

Well, I went back to the mother to ask her. She originally thought it was an ancient Arabic word for “lion,” but recently she read somewhere that it actually means “zebra.”

There is no such thing as a “Muslim” name. Arabic and Muslim are not synonymous. Huda is not a “Muslim” name and you could have been as good a Muslim if you kept your original name. No need to change the name if doesn’t have a bad meaning.

AMK, that is certainly true and is mentioned on the linked page. However, if one has a name that has a bad meaning or (in my case) one that is associated with the worship of other gods, then one is obliged to change it.
