Anti-Muslim Rhetoric & the U.S. Presidential Race

Tuesday February 26, 2008
Another attempt has been made to "slander" U.S. Presidential hopeful Barack Obama by linking him to Muslims and Muslim cultures. The latest attack comes in the form of a photo taken when Senator Obama accepted a gift of clothing while visiting Kenya. He put the clothing on, at the behest of his host, as a gesture of gratitude. As has now been pointed out, many other U.S. officials have donned local clothing while visiting foreign countries -- it's a way of showing respect for human diversity and the generosity of local hosts.

The BBC has reported on the meaning of Obama's robes, a cultural style of dress common among northeast Kenyan nomads, and which have no religious significance.

Those who try to poison Senator Obama's candidacy by attempting to link him to the world Muslim community, play on public stereotypes and fears. Myths abound about Senator Obama's Muslim father, his educational background in Indonesia, and his own religious affiliation. Here at About.com, we bring you the facts:

As Salaam Alaykom
Obama’s mother seemed to have an attraction for non american, non white men. Growing up, he became familiar with civilization outside of America. I could see him being very comfortable in a very mixed crowd of people.

Some Muslims are convinced that he is a Muslim, as they are that 911 was a government plot.

If he survives to become president, I can see him being a source of healing for Blacks in America; one who draws Muslims and other ethnic groups into fuller participation in America.

I also think that a little Muslim thought could be a way to lessen the gap between the middle east and America.

Inshallah, he will be a healing force.

Ma Salaama
