Human Equality During Hajj

By , About.com GuideDecember 15, 2007

Follow me on:

While Malcolm X was in Mecca performing his pilgrimage, he wrote to his assistants: "They asked me what about the Hajj had impressed me the most. . . . I said, `The brotherhood! The people of all races, colors, from all over the world coming together as one! It has proved to me the power of the One God.' . . . All ate as one, and slept as one. Everything about the pilgrimage atmosphere accented the oneness of man under one God." As guest author Ahmad Al-Akhras points out, the Hajj exemplifies equality before God.

How can you talk about the “the oneness of man under one God during the pilgramage” or “Human Equality During Hajj”?

Firstly this human equality obviously only applies to Muslims, because Non-Muslims are not permitted to enter Mecca per Saudi law.

That means that the three quarters of the world who are not Muslims are not “equal” … how much would you complain if we started telling muslims that they weren’t real humans, or that they were excluded from certain cities?

Mr Oscar has mentioned many misconceptions about Islam. I’ll try to respond to some of them.

Quote :”cutting peoples hand for stealing an apple because one is hungry”

(1)there are many conditions for stealing to be “punishable”. One of them is the value of the stolen object (there is a specific threshold). An apple is below that limit. So people don’t lose their hands for stealing an apple.

(2)The Second Caliph (Umar may God be pleased with him) suspended that punishment for a certain period of time because people were suffering from hunger.

Quote :”given a girl 30 lashes for talking to a guy that is not a relative”

This is not true. The only thing is that a girl is not supposed to be alone with a stranger. This is called “khulwa” (which has some obvious consequences) and there is no specific punishment for it. The lashes are given in case of fornication to the male and female fornicator.

Quote :”burying a women up to her head in the ground and stoned to death for having sex to a man, although she may be a widow and him a single man”

(1) in the case of stoning, the adulterer (man or woman not just woman) is not buried to his/her head in the ground

(2)stoning is indicated in case of adultery not fornication. There are conditions as well for applying that punishment (4 witnesses are needed..etc)

(3)a widowed woman having sex with an unmarried man is called fornication (not adultery). Stoning is therefore not indicated.

So Mr Oscar before criticising any religion you should first understand what that religion says.

Have a nice day!
