U.S. Government Intervenes in Schoolgirl Hijab Case
Wednesday March 31, 2004
"Religious discrimination has no place in American schools," says U.S. Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, Alex Acosta. CNN reports that on Tuesday, federal lawyers filed a motion in support of an Oklahoma 6th-grader who would like to wear her religious headscarf (hijab) to school. School district officials have suspended the girl twice for refusing to remove her scarf.
In contrast, the French government has forbidden the hijab in public schools.
