CNN Reports: Sheikh Ahmed Yassin was assassinated in a missile attack by Israeli forces as he left the mosque after Fajr (early-morning) prayer Monday morning. The paraplegic spiritual leader of Hamas, a highly-popular figure throughout Palestine and the Arab world, was described as the head of a terrorist organization by Israel. Seven others were killed in the attack as well, and nearly 20 injured. Pieces of Sheikh Yassin's wheelchair were strewn about the street, and angry protests and retaliatory attacks have already begun.

Regardless of how one feels about Sheikh Yassin, he was an immensely popular figure, a symbol of the Palestinian resistance and the suffering of people under Israeli rule. His assassination is uniting the Palestinian people in anger; even those who are supportive of the peace process and critical of Hamas have denounced this attack. The coming days and weeks will determine if there is any hope of preserving what was left of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
