Praying On Time

Monday August 25, 2008
Many Muslims, myself included, sometimes miss prayers due to forgetfulness or neglect. We get busy with other things, and think that we'll pray as soon as we're done. Sure enough, the time slips by and the prayer is missed. In the event that you miss a prayer for unavoidable reasons, the prayers should be made up as soon as possible. However, how difficult is it really to make the prayers on time?

I was thinking about this during a recent trip to Amman, Jordan. Sitting up on top of a mountain waiting to watch the sunset, I observed a shepherd tending his flock on the hill below. The sun set in brilliant shades of red and orange, while a nearby mosque called the adhan for maghrib prayer. Such a peaceful sight... Then the shepherd, out in the middle of nowhere, poured a cup of water from a container, make ablutions, and kneeled in prayer -- his donkey and sheep grazing nearby.

Here was a man who lives a difficult, outdoor life in one of the world's driest countries. Yet he can spare a bit of water for ablution, a bit of time for prayer. What is our excuse? Waiting for a commercial break during our favorite film? Feeling embarassed in front of fellow students or co-workers? Not wanting to get up before dawn because the floor is cold on our feet?

Islam is a faith that calls us to a simpler life. Allah gives us so many bounties -- good health, education, family, food, work. The very least we can do is bow in thanks to Him a few times a day, during times which are determined for our own benefit. As Ramadan approaches, now is good time to reflect on our habits and excuses, and make repentance for our mistakes and laziness.

Muslim Baby Names

Monday August 18, 2008
Every so often, I hear a Muslim name that I've never heard before. This week, it was the boy's name "Louay." I'm still not sure what the name means -- does anyone else know? What are your favorite names? Do you like traditional names, or unusual ones?
